Swelling is a common side effect of rhinoplasty. Understanding how to reduce swelling after a nose job can help you feel more comfortable and speed up your recovery process. Here are some helpful tips to guide you through this phase. Our team wants to reassure you that swelling is easy to manage and concerns over it shouldn’t keep you from getting this surgery.
Follow What Your Surgeon Tells You
Your surgeon will give you some detailed instructions after your surgery that are specific to what you need to do. It’s important to follow these instructions diligently, like taking any medications your surgeon prescribes and going to your follow-up appointments. Your surgeon may also recommend using nasal sprays or saline rinses.
Maintain Elevation of Your Head
One of the effective and helpful tips for rhinoplasty recovery is to keep your head elevated. When resting or sleeping, use multiple pillows to prop up your head. This position helps promote drainage and prevents fluid from accumulating in your nasal tissues, which can contribute to swelling.
Apply Cold Compresses
Constricting blood vessels and reducing inflammation can be achieved by applying cold compresses to the swollen areas. Apply a provider-approved gel pack, wrapped in a clean cloth, to your under-eye and cheek area and let it sit there for approximately 15 minutes at a time. Never put ice directly on your nose during the healing period.
Stay Hydrated
It’s important to drink lots of water for good health and to lessen swelling after rhinoplasty. Staying properly hydrated may help reduce fluid retention in the body, reducing swelling in turn. It’s best to drink eight glasses of water daily and limit caffeine intake to avoid dehydration.
Avoid Strenuous Activities
While it’s essential to stay active during your recovery, it’s best to avoid strenuous activities that could increase swelling or put strain on your nasal area. Stay away from heavy lifting, intense workouts, and bending over. Stick to light activities like gentle stretching or walking until your surgeon says it’s okay to do more intense exercises.
